Topic: On a viable European Union: some considerations

A static EU would be an inauspicious EU. That the European project has a future is certainly not a self-evident given; this future relies upon the decisions that would guarantee it — or upon an inactivity that could sentence it to rather dim prospects. That being the case, which would be the central topics one would have to take into consideration in the desire to turn the European work-in-progress into a viable and future-oriented reality in the face of continuous and ever-growing challenges?

This short presentation argues that the following clusters of topics would lie at the centre of such an enquiry:

(i) real union in democratic diversity — an actual separation of European powers, debt mutualization, transparency and full visibility of decision-making processes;

(ii) decentralisation and abandoning the ‘our gains/your losses’ mentality for good;

(iii) ecological sustainability as a top priority, with a pronounced disdain for the industrial grudges that this would entail; and, last but not least,

(iv) a re-examination of Europe’s historical, cultural, and religious/secular self-understanding.

These are questions, not answers. Perhaps this particular prioritisation of questions misses the point; what is guaranteed, however, is that the autopilot mentality and autopilot statecraft of the EU certainly misses the point — if not the future.
