In 2009, INMR instituted an annual award to commemorate the life and achievements of the late Dr. Claude de Tourreil, one of the insulator industry’s most respected contributors. Claude passed away from leukemia in 2006, only months after participating as speaker at the 2005 INMR WORLD CONGRESS in Hong Kong.

For 2025, INMR is delighted to announce that the recipient of this award, marking the 20th anniversary of Claude’s final contribution to the field, is Dr. Konstantin O. Papailiou, current President of CIGRE. Konstantin needs no introduction to readers since he is already well known for his own stellar achievements in the electrical power industry. After a career heading one of the early manufacturers of composite insulators in Switzerland, he went on to lead one of Germany’s major manufacturers of electrical components and power cable accessories. Later, he went on to serve as Chair of the CIGRE Study Committee on overhead lines, which became his passion. During this busy time, he still found time to co-author an influential text on insulator technology and application. Now, as CIGRE President for the past year, Konstantin acts as an Ambassador Emeritus, travelling the globe to promote the organization’s goals and ideals. Yet, like for Claude, insulators continue to remain his steadfast passion.

Those who were fortunate enough to know him recognize that he was one of the most respected voices in investigating and commenting on the performance of alternative insulator technologies – always well-informed and always impartial in his opinions. These characteristics made him a trusted source of reliable information at a time when there were often sharply conflicting views on this topic. Claude was also a mentor to many, including myself, never hesitating to share from his deep fount of knowledge and experience.
