The Greek-German-French Partnership: Addressing Europe’s biggest Challenges

There is no shortage of events and discussions exploring the bilateral relations between Greece, Germany, and France. Yet what stands out – perhaps even marking a first of its kind – is the initiative by the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the Institute of International Relations – ΙΔΙΣ to consider the ties among all three countries together and to debate the prospects of a Greek–German–French Partnership. That was precisely the focus on Monday evening in Athens, where the respective Deputy Heads of Mission, Charlotte Schwarzer and Alexandre Diebolt, joined Antonis Klapsis of the University of the Peloponnese and myself for a well-attended and thought-provoking discussion. The key takeaway from this, at times, fascinating exchange was clear: as long as Greece’s foreign policy remains dominated by its tense standoff with Turkey – and as long as arms supplies and defense pledges continue to shape that dynamic – France will continue to enjoy far greater favor among Greeks than Germany does, regardless of Germany’s more substantial role in trade, investment, and tourism.
